William Elgin "Buzz" Senat
William Senat was born on November 30, , the youngest of three children. His father, Herbert Dixon Senat, Sr., was one of the leading commercial advertising artists in the country in the first decades of the 20th century, and his great-uncle, Prosper L. Senat, was a well-known watercolor artist.
His parents divorced in when he was 10 years old, and his father died the following year. In the years that followed, his mother, Mary Elgin Senat, became an active member of the Pennsylvania State Publicity Commission, traveling around the state in the late s to launch motor clubs and promote travel within the state.
Buzz attended Friends Select High School in Philadelphia (where he was known as Elgin Senat). He registered for the draft at the age of 18, on June 30, , and enlisted a few months later, on October Five weeks after he joined the Army, his older brother, Herbert Dixon Senat, Jr., was killed at sea off the coast of England.
