Viswanathan "Vishy" Anand is a five-time World Chess Champion and a grandmaster of Indian chess. He was India's first grandmaster in 1988, and he now has the sixth-highest peak FIDE rating of all time. He was appointed as FIDE's deputy president in 2022.
Anand defeated Alexei Shirov in a six-game tournament to win the FIDE World Chess Championship in 2000, a title he held until 2002. He won the undisputed world championship in 2007, and he successfully defended it against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, Veselin Topalov in 2010, and Boris Gelfand in 2012. He was defeated by Magnus Carlsen in 2013, and he was defeated again in 2014 after winning the 2014 Candidates Tournament.
Anand became the fourth player in history to break beyond the 2800 Elo barrier on the FIDE rating list after Kramnik, Topalov, and Garry Kasparov in April 2006. He was number one for 21 months, the sixth-longest period in history.
