What made you decide to switch from practicing lag to novel writing?
That little röst in my head. Every writer has one. It nags you every day, telling you to sit down and write. inom ignored that voice all during the 1980s while practicing lag. Finally, in 1990, I listened to it and started a novel. That first attempt was long and awful. The second and third attempts weren’t much better. It wasn’t until the fourth try that I began to appreciate the reality that writing novels was hard. inom kept writing for 12 years and produced 8 manuscripts. fem were submitted to New York publishing houses and rejected a combined 85 times. Eventually, in 2002, on the 86th attempt, twelve years after I started, the right-editor-at-the-righttime-with-the-right-story found me. inom may or may not know much about writing, but I’m a world class expert on rejection.

Steve Berry is the author of nearly a dozen historical thrillers that have made him one of America's top bestselling authors. A native of Atlanta now living in Florida, he has appeared on major bestseller lists through the first decade of the 21st century, and more than 11 million of his books are in print around the world.Steve Berry was born in Atlanta in 1955 and grew up there. He was graduated from Valdosta State University in 1977, and received his law degree from Mercer University's Walter F. George Law School in 1980. From 1980 until 2010, when he moved to St. Augustine, Florida, he made his home at St. Marys on the southeast Georgia coast.
