Devastating banana fungus reaches Americas
A banana-killing fungus that has been laying waste to crops in Asia and Australia for decades has been confirmed for the first time in the Americas, the world’s banana-growing heartland. Colombia declared a national emergency on 8 August after confirming the presence of the fungus, known as Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (TR4). Scientists now fear that TR4 has spread beyond a quarantine zone in the north of the country and could threaten banana production in the Americas for decades to come.

Sunney Xie Named BPS Lecturer Xiaoliang Sunney Xie , Lee Shau-kee Professor at Peking University and Director of Biomedical Pioneering Innovation Center, has been selected as the BPS Lecturer at the Biophysical Society 64 th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. Previously, Xie received the Biophysical Society Founders Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as a member of the National Academy of Medicine, among several other prestigious honors. He has made major contributions to the fields of single-molecule enzymology and biophysical chemistry and, along with his research group, pioneered the development of coherent Raman scattering microscopy and single-cell whole genome sequencing. Recently named Director of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, Xie has made significant advances in single-cell genomics. I
