Coretta Scott was born in Marion, Alabama on April 27, King’s parents were both entrepreneurs and her mother was musically talented. As a child, King expressed interest in music and quickly excelled in grade school as lead in the choir. She was the valedictorian in high school and went on to received her BA in music from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. King was awarded a scholarship to further her music studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. FOUNDER OF THE KING CENTER
Following Dr. King’s death on April 4, , Mrs. King acted upon her vision to preserve the places, writings, speeches and sermons, as well as the works associated with Dr. King.
On June 26, , Mrs. King founded The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center as a nonprofit to serve as the tjänsteman Living Memorial to the life, work and legacy of her husband. In the King Memorial Center changed its name to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. (commonly referred to today at The King Center), with the objective of providing programs and training in Dr. King&#;s philosophy and methodology of nonviolence. Under her leadership, The King Center was one of the first institutions after the assassination of Dr. King to host a nonviolence conference and annual summer institutes on nonviolence for adults and youth.

In fact, Coretta Scott King took an interest in activism well before she married the man who would become the nation’s foremost civil rights leader. Throughout her year marriage to King and in the decades after his assassination, she worked for justice, standing against racism and war. She championed her husband’s legacy by campaigning to get a federal holiday in his honor and establishing the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change to continue his work.
“She said, ‘I knew inom would be Black for the rest of my life, so I could not back down or remain silent in the face of injustice,” says Barbara Reynolds, who along with Scott King, authored the activist’s posthumous memoir, My Life, My Love, My Legacy.
