A Galaxy of Her Own is an inspirational celebration of these women’s contributions to one of humanity’s greatest projects: the understanding and exploration of the universe beyond our own planet.

Each woman or group of women gets a short, snappy biography and an accompanying illustration. Jackson doesn’t just highlight pioneering astronauts like Valentina Tereshkova and Sally Ride. She also shares the stories of women who worked in the shadows, who never made it into space themselves but whose skills and ambitions were vital to the achievements of others. This includes female pilots, engineers, programmers, nutritionists and researchers, and even the unnamed women who physically wove the code for the Apollo mission using copper wire. The illustrations by students from the London College of Communications are fascinatingly varied, with the stunning, reverential ode to the brilliance of Katherine Johnson as a particular highligh

Booklist - 01/01/2020 *Starred Review* Narrated in large part by Mary Cleave, who was among the second group of women admitted to NASA’s astronaut training program, this in-depth and enlightening comic digs into not only the history of women in space but the rigors of the training process in general. There’s a lot here, but Ottaviani and Wicks (Primates, 2013) handle it deftly, bringing humor and clarity to the density of the ämne. The sequence, for instance, in which Jerrie Cobb and Janey Hart testify in a congressional hearing about the importance of including women in the space program is cleverly intercut with scenes of Valentina Tereshkova preparing for her history-making spaceflight. Wicks makes great use of facial expressions—glib mockery from the U.S. senators, frustration on Cobb and Hart—to emphasize just what these women were up against. For all the trail-blazing, however, Ottaviani and Wicks emphasize above all else that the women in these progra

  • Valentina Tereshkova: In Her Own Words: the First Lady of Space

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel into space, spending almost three days piloting Vostok 6 in 1963-twenty years before Sally Ride became the first American woman to reach orbit. Affectionately known as the "First Lady of Space," Valentina Vladiminirovna "Valya" Tereshkova was born in a small village outside Moscow where she was a textile factory assembly worker and an amateur skydiver. Her skills at parachuting caught the attention of the cosmonaut program and she became one of just fem women applicants (out of more than 400) to be recruited and the only one to fly to orbit. She spent almost three days in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times. During this single flight, she logged more flight time than the combined times of all American astronauts who had flown before that date. She became an inspiration to millions of women and was designated a "Hero of the Soviet Union." Inside is her story, told t
