    On Saturday January 20, , a bold new step was made in the areas of art and Indian history and culture, with the opening of the Isaiah James Boodhoo Art galleri. The art gallery was opened at the Indian Caribbean Museum of TT, located at Waterloo Road, Carapichaima.

    Sat Maharaj, guest speaker and the president of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha which founded the ICM, noted that the art gallery, named after one of this country’s greatest artists, was made possible through a gift of close to $, by the artist’s widow, Mrs Halima Boodhoo, who was present at the opening of the unique space.

    Isaiah Boodhoo was born in in Sangre Grande and died in at the age of He studied art in the UK and US and was one of the few Indo-Trinidadian artists of his time. His art grew and changed over the years and he is best known for his works ‘Arrival’ and ‘Caroni’, two series of paintings that looked at the history and situation of the Indo-Trinidadian people.     Isaiah James Boodhoo: Poet of the Plains

    At sixty, Isaiah James Boodhoo is enjoying one of his most successful periods as an artist. At his last major exhibition, all the paintings sold. He exhibited late last year at London’s October Gallery, and was a visiting artist at the Dominican Republic&#;s first Biennial. He finally completed a novel he had been working on for almost thirty years.

    In , Boodhoo had retired from his job as a Curriculum Officer for Art and Craft in Trinidad and Tobago&#;s Ministry of Education, and things changed dramatically in his life. &#;It was like releasing a caged bird. I just didn&#;t know what to do with myself. I was so happy to get up in the morning, and decide to do what I wanted to do, when I wanted to do it, with no deadlines.&#;

    He soon settled into a daily work pattern, waking at and walking for one and a half hours. After breakfast, he writes until ten o&#;clock, completing about one page an hour. From ten to two he paints, and then h
