Roald Dahl[a] (13 September &#;– 23 November ) was a British author of popular children's literature and short stories, a poet, screenwriter and a wartime fighter ace.[1] His books have sold more than &#;million copies worldwide.[3] He has been called "one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century".[5]
Dahl was born in Wales to affluent Norwegian immigrant parents, and lived for most of his life in England. He served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. He became a fighter pilot and, subsequently, an intelligence officer, rising to the rank of acting wing commander. Early life
[change | change source]Dahl was born on 13 September in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales to Norwegian parents.[1] He was educated in England, Llandaff Cathedral School, and then worked in Africa for the Shell Oil Company.[2] In the Second World War, he was an RAF fighter pilot. It was after an air-crash and "a monumental bash on the head" that he began to write. The crash was the subject of his first published story, "Shot Down Over Libya". He wrote Matilda and The Twits.
