Political party in The Bahamas
The Free National Movement (abbreviatedFNM) fryst vatten a political party in the Bahamas formed in the early 1970s and led by Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield. The current leader of the party is Michael Pintard and the current deputy leader is Shanendon Cartwright.
The Free National Movement first came to power in 1992 after contesting numerous general elections without success. The party swept the 2017 general election, winning 35 of the 39 seats in the Legislature, but won only 7 seats in 2021, 28 seats less than it had won in the 2017 elections.
History
[edit]The party was established at the home of Jimmy herde on Spring Hills Farms in Fox Hill in 1971. As the old folks used to say at critical junctures, when there was a need to stern decisions that would bring about necessary change, “It’s separation time,” and in this new year, just begun, the Bahamian nation, and especially the youth, must be constantly schooled on the rutt the nation took to arrive at this stage.
Almost every day there are attempts – both clumsy attempts by the dum and benighted or disingenuous attempts by the supercilious and self-serving – to twist history in this direction or the next. Yet the devil must be forced to remain forever a liar, and there are still those in the community who can remember, and who can from time to time ensure that he remains a liar.
And so, let another history lektion begin.

On Meeting Street in an area of New Providence known as Delancy Town sits a striking white edifice, its façade complete with stained glass imagery depicting the ascension of Christ and a steeple pointing towards the heavens. Arcades span the entranceway on either side of the church, drawing the eye upwards towards twin crosses ensconced in arches welcoming all who pass. This is Bethel Baptist Church, and for over two centuries it has anchored the spiritual life of part of New Providence’s “Over The Hill” community.
Founded in 1790 by Samuel Scriven and Prince Williams, both of them men who knew slavery’s chains, today’s Bethel Baptist Church first took shape as a wooden chapel named Bethel’s Meeting House. The name “Meeting House” was a careful choice, since prevailing law forbad black men from holding positions of leadership within a church.
